Chess Spoiler format for problem answers etc., !Spoiler text! I just wanted to recommend this chess game (PC) to any beginners out there who are looking for an introduction.
The game features some awesome chess lessons from Josh Waitzkin. These tutorials takes you through a lot of different chess situations and with Josh's great narrative you get a good idea of how to think chess. I see a lot of people on this forum who have extremely low ranking and I think it's because of a lack of basic knowledge about the game. This tutorial gives you the knowledge you need to play decent chess in a very fun and intuitive way. A lot of beginners on this sub would benefit immensely from playing this game. It really is a shame. I owned pretty much every edition of this game since 6000.
I think part of the problem and reason that it's no longer developed is that there's really nowhere else for the series to go. IIRC, in the 8000-9000-10 era especially there was some criticism in this regard, that each release had only one or two small features or some instructive content to differentiate it. Grandmaster Edition had a substantial UI revamp and some more instruction goodies; but with three separate courses of instruction in it, a bunch of puzzles and minigames, etc - it's really hard to imagine what more a new release could possibly add. And consider also that although Waitzkin's academy stands up pretty well, he seems to have mostly moved on from chess at this point in his life and I don't expect there's much he would be able to offer in terms of updates or new course material. The game is available as a DVD, you can find it.
I find it strange that people expect everything to be on Steam (??). It's in Amazon, eBay, etc. Yeah it's no longer supported but that's fine. It's perfectly usable and the updates still download from Ubi's server.
Maybe they will get the hint and release it again even if it's a barely modified version. It could do with a touchscreen-oriented interface.
Seriously it could be the most popular chess programme again if only they tried. I guess there's not a lot of money in that. The opening theory part needs an update. The engine not so much really, people don't use it to have the very strongest engine.
It's good enough to beat anybody in a modern computer. You can make it run Stockfish using UCI. EDIT: see if you want to plug-in stronger engines to use with Chessmaster's interface. Chessmaster 7000 to 9000 are about the same. I have Chessmaster 10th edition. They are the most useful chessplaying and learning PC programs ever. The computer personalities mimic different playing styles very well.
So you can play various opponents and not get bored. There is a full computer tutorial from beginner to club player. It also has an assortment of classical games with notes.
This is because I used to have Chessmaster 2100 and they added more content for something like 20 years.
